Introducing Tegan Bayle

Blackstone Prison is one of the many dirty little secrets of
the Empire. It is the deepest, darkest, dankest, hellhole imaginable and where the Empire houses a collection of hardened criminals, 'political' prisoners, and those unlucky few who simply needed to disappear. Blackstone Prison was one of those places that everyone has heard about but was unwilling to talk about in polite company. Poor living conditions, horrible nutrition, forced labor, and a brutal sadistic humanoid guard force ensured that no one ever escaped from Blackstone.

You are a prisoner at Blackstone. It may have been days, weeks, months, or even years since you were incarcerated, but the indominatable force of Blackstone is beginning to crush any hope you have that you will ever leave Blackstone alive.

Introducing Tegan Bayle

Post by chameleon » Tue October 18 05 ; 2 32 pm

Tegan Bayle looked nervously both ways as he crossed the only intersection between the well and the work room. He and his fellow prisoners had spent the day pushing the wheel that ground grain into meal. Tegan had been selected to get what passed as clean water in this place for his fellow co-workers. It said something about the guards disdain for him that he was allowed to do this without having a guard accompany him.

As Tegan rushed as quickly back down the corridor as he could, water slopped from the bucket onto the floor. It was always a compromise ... walk to quickly and too much water is lost meaning no water for you or walk to slow and waste a break meaning no water for anyone and alienating your cell mates.

Tegan re-enters the work room and is immediately mobbed by his fellow prisoners who practically fight over the water no matter how filthy. As he waits his turn ... the runner always went last ... Tegan looks around the work room. Orcan guards armed with short swords and crossbows paced around a walkway ten feet above the floor of the work room and around the room. Every third guard kept pair of snarling war dogs tightly leashed. Always oppressive ... always giving the impression that there was no way to escape.

It was finally Tegan's turn for a drink. Just enough for a dipper full of water was left. As he pulled the drink to his lips,

The voice rings out across the work room. A new half-orcish guard and six flanking ogre guards appear on the walkway.

Tegan dropped the water upon the ground, the ladel seeming to echo in the silence of the cell. There wasn't much that made him so skittish these last few days; his nerves were growing more and more frayed. Hope hardly came to visit him in these dark halls, but now she gave a whispered plea for his attentions. She called out for freedom, an overturned conviction or the saving grace of Lathander.

Closing his eyes and taking a step forward towards the guards was all Tegan could do not to have his frail mental capacities shatter. Hope's call was not to be headed in this place. Guilt and remorse held him far tighter than any chains could bind, or any emotion could destroy. His voice was far more stable than he felt inside. He shivered under their stare.

"I am Tegan Bayle."

He proceeded to assume the prostrate position to be led by the guards, knowing full well any resistance would be an excuse and no resistance might be just enough of an excuse for beatings. His lips remained dry, his throat parched. The priest kept all of those feelings at the forefront. Penance was his only companion, and the only way towards salvation of mind, though his spirit was surely mortaly wounded.

Tegan heard several guard chuckle as he prostrated himself to be taken away the guards. Nonetheless a few seconds later, the half orcish guard dropped a length of rope to the floor below the walkway where he stood.

"Rise boy. Get your tail over here and up this rope. We don't have all day to wait!"

Several of the guards chuckled at this. Thinking it was another game where the prisoner would almost make it up the rope before being dropped to the ground again.

"Well," came the voice from above. "What are you waiting for?"

Rising to his feet, Tegan grabs onto the rope. Feeling the fibers sliding between his fingers, the little spell-weaver tries to climb, but in his mind, he knows he doens't have anywhere near the amount of strength to lift himself the height of the cell's walls. Moving to attempt to brace himself against the wall, he tries to scale up to the best of his abilities, knowing full well that any fall could break his body beyond usefulness. Keeping his eyes forward, Tegan pulls as hard as his body can manage to reach the top.

Tegan struggles his way up the rope. At just about the time he makes it three-fourths of the way up to the walkway, the guards let out some more rope dropping him back to almost were he started. The guards all laugh as young Tegan is forced to make his way back up the rope. The guards holding the rope do this three more times before finally pulling the young man up and over the lip to the walkway.

Placing Tegan in the middle of the phalanx, the guards march off to whatever destination they are seeking with Tegan in tow. They seem to march for an interminably long time leaving Tegan wondering just where they are. Finally, they arrive in front of a door. The phalanx parts and the leader motions toward the door.

Tegan tests the door, quickly seeing if it is hot, and once determining the temperature, opens it. His wrists pop a little as he turns the nob, though he barely hears it through his straining ears, still muddled and bombarded with the sound of his rapid heart rate. With inching steps and swallowing his desert of a mouth, the spellcaster moves forward. Still feeling his skin tingle as if it was slapped, he waited and watched what came acrossed his vision with pain and apprehension.

The guards only laugh harder at Tegan's apprehension in opening the door. A couple look like the simply want to throw the door open and push Tegan inside, but the rest are enjoying his discomfort so much that they prevent those few from acting.
