Outside the front of the inn, you see a sign with the words “Howling Spirit Tavern and Inn” imposed over the image of a Howling Spirit and a holy symbol of Beltine. Even with the eerie ground fog that is now beginning to roll into town, you can make out the very faint traces of smoke coming from one of the chimneys that dot the inn’s roof. However, the inn looks to be locked up tight. The shutters are closed and both doors are locked when checked. However, unlike the other two buildings, there are no boards over the front of the doors. As you examine the outside of the building, there is no discernable sound from the inside of the building. The fog is growing thicker as the light continues to fade. Your horses beging to get more skittish, even more than the previous encounter at the gruesome stables.

Adelle's lip curls in the corner of her mouth at the inn's somewhat ironic name. She checks the front door. "Locked," she says, surprised. "Maybe I'm underestimating these monsters, but a locked door seems like it could be a good sign. We don't have a lot of light left, though.. I suggest we take only a quick look inside, then get ourselves somewhere less conspicuous for the night."

If the others agree to take a look inside, Adelle pulls a rolled up leather tool kit from her bag and sets to work picking the lock.

[OOC: Taking ten on an Open Lock check for a modified result of 21.]

“In the name if Illiir, I command you to be gone evil abomination!” These words are the only thing you hear before a holy symbol of Illiir is thrust boldly at you. Before you can form a reply, several grim faced people wielding makeshift weaponry appear to confront you. The tall, well-muscled, blonde haired man with the holy symbol steps forward with an embarrassed scowl and lowers his arm. “Calm down everyone. Illiir has heard our prayers. These hardy warriors have obviously received our call for help and have come to us in our hour of need." Turning back to you he says, "Thank you all so very much for coming. Some were beginning to lose hope. Please, come in. If you have any food, bring that in as well." He motions you toward the door. "So, is Marcus still with you or has he gone to gather more help? Where are my manners? I'm Benefacio Janus Fidelis. And you are?”

~After you all introduce yourselves and are escorted in~

Once inside the tavern, you see that it looks more like a barracks than a bar. Bedrolls for the roughly twenty people hiding here litter the floor. A fire burns low in one fireplace over which hangs a pot of simmering stew. Candles are lit sparsely providing an eerily illumination with shadows dancing along the walls. Curiously, all the men here except Janus seem either very old or very young.

Between mouthfuls of food from his rations, Ethain tries to find out exactly what happened at the village. Noticing the lack of young men, he guesses the stronger members of the population went out to attack whatever forces caused the tragedy. He wonders how long they've been gone and whether there's still a hope that they will return.
"Yes, we found your letter, Benfacio, sir. I understand it must be difficult, but please tell us exactly what happened. We will do our best to help in any way that we can." He keeps his tone lowered, so that the others at the inn won't have to hear the, no doubt awful, story.

Minnie does her best to smile at all times, trying to keep the people's hopes up and also to convince them that she is kind and not a threat to them. She walks around the room with the symbol of Beltine visible and does her best to assure the people by offering prayers or any assistance the need. She tends to say few words other then blessings and prayers as she listens to any information that is forthcoming.

Adelle stays close to Minnie in an effort to balance the woman's intimidating heritage with her own presence. While she waits for Janus to relate his story, she tries to think of the best way to phrase the bad news that Marcus is most certainly dead and cooked to a crisp not a day's walk away.

Whats there to do but tell them what they want to hear? Their hero died a hero - whether its the truth or not doesn't matter anymore. Maybe they can tell me what I want to hear.. about this "howling spirit", for starters. First the signet ring, and now the inn's name..

[OOC: I'm interested in anything a +5 Sense Motive modifier will tell me about Janus' story.]

Undead have been attacking the town, and we don't know why. The Beltinian wards in the area should have protected us from this, but they seem to be failing for some reason. Everyone left alive has taken refuge here in the inn to make a final stand. All the young men have gone off to join the legions in Enpebyn so this motly group is all that we have right now. Marcus happened to be on leave here when the undead began attacking. Please, tell me why he is not with you? Is he searching out more people to help or has something happened.

OOC: Just so you know, your going to have to ask the right questions to get the information you want, and that's how its going to go with most people you talk to... If I feel there is something necessary that you don't directly ask about I might include it, but otherwise you do need to work for stuff, I'm not going to just give it all out :) I will do my best to hint at other possible questions but a general 'tell me your story' isn't going to cut it. Did I mention Arcanis is very RP centric? :D

And as far as sense motive from what little you have so far, as far as you can tell he is completely honest.

Adelle shakes her head sadly no, but holds her chin level. "You have my deepest sympathies, but Marcus is dead," she says honestly, her tone full of respect. "He, and some of our men as well, died together. We didn't arrive in time to help them, but we managed to avenge their deaths - and mercifully, Minnie here is a true follower of Beltine, and delivered a blessing on Her behalf over the departed. We share your loss," she adds, mournfully, "and we are here to help however we can."

The bard stands with hands on hips so as to part her cloak enough to coincidentally display the lavish and intricately designed twin hilts of her swords; though loathe to discuss them, she always finds a way to draw attention to them. "It was your letter that led us here," she says thankfully to Janus. "You are all brave to make this stand as you are. How many of you are there?"

The easy questions first.. I'll slip in something about the damn howling spirit later..

In a show of support, Minnie walks by Adelle places her hand on her shoulder and stands behind her as if united. She on the other hand wears nothing impressive other than her immense size.

Leaving a respectful pause to let the news sink in a little, Ethain waits before putting in his share of the questions. "We didn't know how old your letter was when we found it. When did you write it, and how long is it since the attacks began? Have you any idea who - or what - is behind them?"
The Barbarian suspects it must be some Cleric devoted to an evil deity but keeps this thought to himself for the time-being.
